2 Aug 1943-- Began move to Port Moresby, New Guinea; arrived on 4 Aug 1943. (First American organization of its type in Pacific Theater.) {{I suspect that the 2 and 4 Aug 1943 dates are not quite correct.}}
13 Nov 1943--Redisignated as the 138th Signal Radio Intelligence Company, Aviation.
19 Mar 1944--Renamed 1st Army Air Forces Radio Squadron, Mobile.
24 Apr 1944—Renamed 1st Radio Squadron, Mobile
2 Sept 1945—Moved to Johnson Air Base, Iruagawa, Japan
Dec 1945—Transferred from Fifth Air Force to ASA
1 Feb 1949—Transferred from Department of Army to the Air Force and HQ USAFSS.
Note #2 The 2nd RSM was apportioned 9 May 1945. The 2nd RSM was located in the Frankfurt Area and was ordered out of the area along with several other Army units.
Shannon Brown, CO of the 2nd RSM (located outside of Frankfurt and thus had to move) found a German airfield near Herzogenaurach.
Between 21 January and 4 March, 1947, the units moved down to Herzo Base.
In February of 1949 the 2nd RSM was transferred to the Air Force.
Note #3 The 68th IOS was originally activated 9 November 1942 as the 958th Radio Company, Aviation, at Drew Field, Tampa Fla. It was transferred to Camp Pinedale, Fresno, California 25 January 1943, under the Western Signal Aviation Unit Training Center. The original mission of the unit was to provide a group of highly specialized men for use in gathering radio intelligence for the Air Force. But at this time the unit was redesignated as a Japanese Intercept unit. When training for the unit was complete, it was redesignated as the Provisional First Radio Squadron Mobile. In March 1944 the unit was redesignated the 8th Army Air Force Radio Squadron, Mobile, and was transferred from the Signal Corps to the Army Air Force. In September of that year moved to Lawton Staging Area, near Seattle, Wash.
Several moves occurred between September 1944 and February 1949 when the 8th Radio Squadron, Mobile, was transferred from the Department of the Army to the Department of the Air Force and assigned to the Air Force Security Service. On 9 November 1944, the unit arrived on Guam, Marianas Islands. The unit had D/F sites at Peleliu, Saipan and Iwo Jima after it was taken. The D/F unit at Saipan eventually moved to Okinawa 1 September 1945. The unit also had D/F units on Ngeseleus Island in addition to Guam. After the end of the war, the unit was transferred to Vint Hill Farms, Virginia, where it became a nonoperational, paper pipeline organization for the Army Security Agency. On 23 February 1949, the unit moved to Brooks AFB, Texas and continued to function as a personnel processing squadron until 12 October 1950. 1 September 1950, it was designated as an intercept training school with 10 intercept positions and one trick chief console position.
Note #4 The 1st, 2nd and 8th RSM along with the 136th Radio Communications Security Detachment were transferred from the Army to the Air Force 1 February 1949. According to Fred Wagner, the 136th RCS was called the 139th Radio Security Squadron. Detachments of the unit were letter designated. For example the AAF/ASA unit in Japan was known as Radio Security Section 18, 136th Radio Security Detachment. Under the USAF/ USAFSS, it was called Detachment F, 136th Radio Security Squadron.
Note
#5
The mission of the 97th Intelligence Squadron is to provide
mission-ready personnel and systems for worldwide airborne
reconnaissance, and collecting and providing intelligence to
warfighters and national leadership. The 97th Aero Squadron was
activated on 20 August 1917, Kelly Field, Texas and was an active
participant in two World Wars until it was finally disbanded in 1943.
The 97th has, since its inception, been a multi-faceted unit. Through the war torn years of the first half of this century, we showed our mettle by demonstrating that ability. From repairing various aircraft for the war effort (a series of observation aircraft, P-39, P-40, P-43, A-20, DB-7, L-1, and L-4s), to anti-submarine warfare, to training and supporting ground forces on maneuvers, we continually demonstrated our ability to support warfighters. Our present mobility is no new thing for us either. In its early years, the unit was active in its mission at 13 separate locations in the United States, as well as spending 2 years in various locations in France during World War I.
The squadron began as an Aero Squadron at Kelly Field, eventually becoming the 97th Observation Squadron, 97th Observation Squadron (Medium), 97th Reconnaissance Squadron, 97th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS), and now its current incarnation as the 97th Intelligence Squadron (IS). The 97 TRS was disbanded on 11 August 1943, and remained inactive for 50 years until 1 October 1993, when it was reactivated as the 97 IS at Offutt Air Force Base (AFB), Nebraska.
During this 50 years, the squadron remained active serving the needs of the Air Force. From 1963 to 1993, it served America numerically as the 6949th. The 49th started out as Detachment 1, 6940th Security Wing, under the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS) and was activated on 1 July 1963 at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. In 1964, Detachment 1 became the 6949th Security Squadron and was commanded by Major Doyle E. Larson. This set a precedent of firsts for Major Larson, for in 1979 he became the first Commander of the Electronic Security Command (ESC) as a general officer.
The 49th, however, remained a squadron until 1975, when it was deactivated and integrated into the 6944th Security Wing. The unit continued to be part of the 44th until 1979, when ESC was created. Reactivated as the 6949th Electronic Security Squadron (ESS) for less than a year, the unit was elevated to Group status in 1980. 6949 ESS made its final appearance in 1981, remaining the 49th until 1 October 1993. This date commemorates both the birthday of the 97th Intelligence Squadron (IS) and that of the Air Intelligence Agency (AIA).
Note #6 The 303rd Intelligence Squadron serves as the largest signals intelligence agency on the Korean peninsula. The squadron’s mission involves a continued working relationship and integrated operations with the Republic of Korea 1925th Ministry of Defense, 7th Air Force, 607th Air Intelligence Group and 607th Air Intelligence Squadron.
The 303rd IS mission is to defend the interests of the United States by providing quality intelligence and combat support to warfighters and national decision-makers in Korea. They also conduct information operations by exploiting and processing time-critical combat intelligence for U.S. and allied battle managers, unified and specified commands, and the National Command Authorities. Additionally, the 303rd IS provides indication and warning, advisory support, secure communications and information for warfare support.
The unit performs all-source analysis to identify the adversary’s critical command, control, communications, computers and intelligence technologies and nodes for target nomination and communications vulnerability assessments for U.S. and allied forces. 303rd IS supplies the commander in chief U.S. Forces Korea and 7th AF commander offensive and defensive information warfare capabilities. This helps them to conduct advanced analysis in support of air campaign planning as well as C2 PROTECT electronic combat training.
The unit provides rapid radio relay, secure communications and command, control, and communication countermeasures support to the United States and allied forces. Unit members develop and apply techniques and material designed to ensure that friendly C4I are secure and protected from enemy countermeasures. The unit also advises U.S. and allied commanders concerning procedures and techniques, which could be used to counter enemy C4I.
The 303rd IS, popularly known as "Skivvy Nine," has one of the most challenging and exciting missions in the air intelligence world. The unit was originally formed as a detachment of the 1st Radio Squadron Mobile at Johnson Air Base, Japan, on Nov. 20, 1950. The unit was readied for immediate deployment to Korea in response to the invasion of the South Korea by North Korean forces. Following several redesignations during the Korean
NoteWar, the unit was finally designated as a detachment of the 15th RSM and moved to Osan in April 1953. In Nov. 1954, however, it again became Det. 1 of the 1st RSM. In May 1955, when the 15th was redesignated the 6922nd, the detachment at Osan became Det. 1 of the 6922nd.
In Oct. 1958 it became the 6929th RSM and was assigned to the 6902nd Special Communications Group. In Dec. 1958 it was transferred back to the 6922nd. In July 1963 it became the 6929th Security Squadron and in April 1970 it was designated Det. 1, Pacific Security Region. In May 1970 it gained squadron status as the 6903rd Security Squadron. The unit was designated a Group in 1981 and remained as such until 1993 when it was designated the 303rd IS, under the 692nd Intelligence Group, the 67th Intelligence Wing, and the Air Intelligence Agency.
Over the years, many people have contributed to Skivvy Nine’s "can-do" reputation. In 1951 the unit won its first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Korean Streamer Award. Since then the unit has garnered more than 10 AFOUAs. In 1974 the 6903rd SS was presented the Freedom Through Vigilance award as security service’s top unit. In 1979 the unit won the coveted Travis Trophy, an annual award presented to the most outstanding U.S. Cryptologic Agency of the Defense Department, and received honorable mention for the same award in 1994. The unit was the Air Force nominee for the Travis Trophy again in 1996. The 303rd IS won the Large Unit Air Force Outstanding Maintenance award in 1982. In 1994 and 1996, Skivvy Nine won the U.S. Air Force Top Ground-Based Cryptologic Unit award.
Note #7 The school at Goodfellow was turned over to Air Training Command 1 July 1978.
Note #8 The squadron began as the 951st Radio Company at Harding Field, Louisiana. During World War II, it was relocated to Europe directly supporting allied operations. After the war, it was relocated to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, and re-designated the 3d Radio Squadron, Mobile (3rd RSM).
Note #9 Traffic Analysis School
Note #10 The origins of the unit were TDY groups from the Japanese Unit. There were two deployments both were handled as TDY missions from Nagoya. The first mission was in late 1950. It was located at Seoul and it was quickly withdrawn during the Chinese offensive in the latter part of that year. They got out with the clothes on their backs. The unit lost its equipment and all members of the team lost their personal belongings. The second mission began in the later part of 1951 and it was located in the Ewha College area of Seoul. The unit moved to K-55 (Osan-ri) in 1955.
Note
#11 I forgot one additional OL yesterday...when we first arrived in
San Diego in 1972/3 we were OL-EC of the 6948 SS(M). Because
we didn't have the Compass EARS S&WC yet, we were using an old
IRON HORSE system, and reported to the DCS of System & Technology
(Col Charles Erlinger) in HQ USAFSS. Because of this, we were
re-designated OL-GF, 6960th Support Group. When the Compass
EARS module arrived in 1974, we again became OL-EC, 6948 SS(M), and
another unit, with Bill Hazelwood and eventually Pete Peterson was
established operating out of the SC/ADP function at the Hq to provide
software support to the EARS system. I don't remember whether that
stayed OL-GF of the '60th or whether it had a different designation.
I should have read your question before I wrote today’s note!
I left the 6908th at NKP in January of 1973, and reported
to San Diego in February of that year. That turned out to be
my last tour in USAFSS, as I left San Diego in June 1976 and
went to the Tactical Air Forces Interoperability Group (TAFIG) at
Langley AFB, VA.
I think the OL in San Diego closed within the
next year, as the test bed had completed its mission, and the systems
became operational. It was a fun tour—I was a captain at that
time, living and working in a Navy town, so it worked great on the
telephone whenever we needed anything at the unit—but it only
worked one time after they saw me, and eventually we found that
people at the Center began asking whether I was a real (i.e., Navy)
captain, or that Air Force fellow they saw wandering around.
Note #12 Headquarters for the 136th Radio
Security Detachment (AAF) was located at Bolling Field, Washington,
D.C. and then Reading Army Air Field, Reading Pa.
Some units of the 136th RSD were:

3rd Radio Security Section---Camp Daly, Daly City, California
